Physical Features
Physical features like seas, mountains and rivers are natural. They would be here even if there were no people around. Human features like houses, roads and bridges are things that have been built by people.
Can you spot the human and physical features in the video below?
Google Earth satellite images show physical features such as rivers and mountains. Go to the website here, click on the search function (magnifying glass icon) and type Somerset, UK. The red outline shows the border of Somerset. Can you spot the beaches?
Use the zoom function (the + button in the bottom right hand corner) to see some of the physical features of Somerset. Are there any hills or rivers? If you zoom in further, can you find the names of some of the features? You may notice that Somerset also has large areas of flat land. In fact, this wetland area, known as the Somerset Levels and Moors, has some of the lowest, flattest land in the UK.
Now you are going to compare Somerset with Valais in Switzerland. Enter Valais, Switzerland in the search box. What do you notice? How is Valais different? Why is there so much white? Can you see the lakes and mountains? If you zoom in, can you spot any glaciers?
