Today our extension will be the problem below.  Try to have a go at it!

Literacy

For this literacy unit we are following the Somerset Literacy Network plan on Somerset Folktales!  For this we are going to be particularly looking at the story of, 'The Seven Sisters'.

Please see a picture of it below and also the file of it will be attached.

For today's activity I would like you to read the first page of the story. 'The Seven Sisters'.   Stop at the bottom of the first page.  

Talk about the following questions and make some notes in your book to share when you go back to school.

• In which old kingdom of England is this story set? 
• Queen Eleanor “would try to find any excuse to hold a ball.” What does that mean?
• “King Gyffarde forbade singing and dancing.” What does the word ‘forbade’ mean?  Which other words mean the same?   
• Why did the daughters start dancing in secret?
• Where could you see from the top of Cothelstone Hill?
• What do you understand by the term “men-at-arms”?  What other word could be used instead?
• The first part of the story ends with the king about to confront his daughters. What does ‘confront’ mean?

Can you suggest what might happen next and how the story might end?

Reading

I would like you to spend some time every day reading your reading book or any book you are enjoying.  It is great to read to others but it is also good to do some independent reading!  Maybe you could send in some book reviews that we could share on our webpage!

REMEMBER, we now have a great website called GetEpic!  It would be wonderful to see you using that as well!

Read, Write Inc

In Read Write Inc we are continuing looking at unit 10 focussing on words with the suffix -ian, it is on page 41-44.  But today I would like you to just work on page 43 and complete the log and learn, dictation and four-in-a-row activities.  Tomorrow we shall go onto choose the right word, team teach and jumping orange word activities.  

Do remember to practice for your test on Thursday.

REMEMBER, you can always go back over previous units and complete and work which you did not quite finish.

Science

Today we are going to continue looking at light and dark. Your lesson will focus on changing shadows.  You have an investigation involving how shadows change over distance.  Will it be a bigger or smaller shadow if the object is closer to the light source?

The PowerPoint presentation and the two worksheets are linked below.  The work sheets are broken down into 1 star, 2 stars and 3 stars.  Choose the level of challenge that would be best for you.  1 star is some challenge and 3 stars is the greatest challenge.  I look forward to hearing about you investigations!
