In Maths this week Green Group are starting a new block of work on Fractions and Red Group are starting a new block of work on Place Value.

Introduce Jack and the Beanstalk. Have you read this book before? What happens? What do you think will happen?

Read Jack and the Beanstalk expressively, if you have the book, if not use the link below.

Decide on actions for key words and repeat the story: once, twice, Jack, walked, mother, beans, climbed, giant, giant’s wife, thumping, gold, smell, use bones to grind my bread, luckily, inside

Now can you use drama to act out the story, can different family members become different characters or could you use soft toys or role play characters to act out the story.

Read the shortened version of the text, can you note any differences and then join in with the story. We will learn this version.

Have a think about different word classes. What verbs are used in the model text?  walk, ran, climb, fell etc.

Read the powerpoint below on verbs, nouns and fronted adverbials, can you identify the different word classes.

Ch re-read the shortened version in pairs taking turns to read one sentence at a time. Can you remember the story and retell it without the text?

Using the shortened story version can you find all the verbs, nouns and fronted adverbials? 

Using different colours for different word classes, can you highlight each

Which parts of the story are repeated? Why? Create class story map to help re-tell the story.  Encourage children to re-tell the story of Jack and the Beanstalk. 

 

Discuss how the author hasn’t used many said words. Why is it important to include ‘said’ words? It allows the reader to know who is speaking.
