Week beginning Mon 6th July

Friday 10th July

Good morning everyone!

Activities for today are as follows:-

Please continue with your White Rose Home Learning week 11. If you would like to continue your learning about time then click here for some good activities on Espresso.

English – Writing

Today we are going to be writing our own version of Jack and the Beanstalk. Hopefully you have had time to fill in the box-up sheet from Wednesday with some of the changes you would like to make.

I have had a go at making a few changes, using Monday’s story ‘Jess and the Bean Root’ to inspire me. Click below to see my box-up sheet.

I have used my box-up sheet to help me write my story. Here goes…..

Once upon a time there was a girl called Anna. She lived with her father on the top floor of a block of flats, in the city. They were very poor. One day, Anna’s Dad asked her to take their pet lizard to market to sell it for a good sum of money. Anna sadly agreed to this because she knew they needed the money for food. On the way to market she met a strange lady, dressed in a long flowing white robe. The lady wanted a lizard and offered her 5 magic seeds in return. When Anna arrived home ……

We hope you enjoy writing your own version of this story. We would love to read them, so please do email them to us.

Quest – Science

What has happened to your cress seeds? Here is a picture of mine.

Day 11

Today we would like you to record your results and write what you have found out.

Did we prove that seeds need water to grow? (Yes, because the seeds that were not watered did not grow.)

Did we prove that seeds need light to grow? (No, because the seeds in the dark with water did grow, although they were not a healthy green colour like the ones grown in the light.)

There is a sheet attached below to help.

What can you do with your seeds now?

  1. Eat the grown cress…. It’s lovely in a sandwich or in a salad!
  2. Grow some more, by watering the seeds that didn’t get watered.
  3. Leave the yellow cress in the light and continue to water. I wonder if it will turn green?

Quest – DT

Click on the picture for a mister maker clip on how to make a funny grass head character. Perhaps you could make yours look like the giant in your story?

You might like to use compost rather than cotton wool if you would like your grass hair to continue growing for a while!

Have a lovely weekend!

Wednesday 8th July

Hello everyone!

Here are your activities for today:

Please continue to work through your White Rose activity – Week 11.

Get mum or dad to test you on last week’s spellings:

How did you do?

We have now completed all the spelling patterns in our Read Write Inc booklets, so this week, please can you practise spelling the days of the week?

Which is the easiest?  Which days are trickier to spell?

Please learn them ready for next week.

Now today, we would like you to plan your own story based on Jack and the Beanstalk.  The story you read on Monday should give you some ideas too.

You may decide you would like to change Jack to Jill and the cow for a pig.

The magic beans may turn into a tree or into a rainbow!

At the top may be a cave, or a theme park.

Use your imagination, we know you will have lots of super ideas!

Use the boxing up sheet below to help you plan.  The red words, you could change.

Quest - Science

How are your experiments coming along?

Here are some photos of my children’s beans.  As you can see, they have started to sprout.  Can you see the roots?  Which direction are the going?  Can you see the stem too?

Day 1
Day 7
Day 8

Continue with your bean diary.  Have a look at mine to give you some ideas.

Have a look at the diagram below, and then have a go at making one of your own which shows each stage of the bean life cycle.

You can either continue to watch your bean grow in the bag for a little longer or plant in a pot or in the garden.

Happy Wednesday!

Tuesdays and Thursdays every week

Remember to use Tuesdays and Thursdays to catch up on anything from the previous day, or to explore some of the many online games and activities available.

Please continue your daily White Rose activities, click on the link here to watch the video and then the worksheets are attached below.

Check My Maths too and see if you've completed all the activities.

Please continue to read every day, there is a website called Harper Collins which has a range of books for you to read and explore.  You will need your mum or dad to register for free and then there are many books to choose from.

All About Me

We hope you have received your letter about your new class in September and enjoyed finding out a bit about Miss Harman.  Don't forget to write a little something about yourself and send in so Miss Harman can get to know you too!

This week I thought we would look at a different style of art - Pointillism.  Click on the picture below to find out a bit more about this style.  Then either use the ideas in the clip to imitate one of them or create your own.

Remember you could use felt pens, pencil crayons, paint and cotton buds is always effective too!  We'd love to see any of your artwork so do email it in.

Forest School

Head over to Miss Brimble's Forest School page to find lots of fun activities to explore.

Check out the Get Active page for lots of ideas for keeping fit.  Mrs Fielding has added lots of links to fun activities for you to do.

Monday 6th July

Good morning! Hope you have had a lovely weekend? Our activities today:-

Please continue with White Rose Home Learning week 11. This week focuses on measuring volume, temperature and time. Again, these are both areas that we have not yet covered this year in year 2, so children may need a little more support. The worksheets are attached below.

English - Reading Comprehension

Today we are going to read a story that is similar to 'Jack and the Beanstalk'. It is an Oxford Owl story called 'Jess and the Bean Root'. Click on the book to take you straight  there if you have already registered.

Or click here to register for free access to EBooks.

1. Why was Jess excited to find a golden bean in her beans on toast? (page 3)

2. Why did Jess's Mum think Jess was silly when she planted the golden bean? (page 4)

3. Why was Jess surprised when she went to her balcony? (page 9)

4. After Jess had slid down the bean root, what could she see? (page 13)

5. Why was the giant sad? (page 16)

6. What made the giant happy at the end of the story? (page 22 & 24)

7. Talk about the similarities and differences between 'Jess and the Bean Root' and 'Jack and the Beanstalk'.

Later on this week, we will be writing our own stories, similar to Jack and the Beanstalk, but with a few 'twists' like 'Jess and the Bean Root'.

Quest - Science

We are trying to prove if light and water is needed for seeds to grow. Here are my results, so far on day 7.

Day 7

Results, so far....

The seeds without water have not started to grow at all.

The seeds growing in the dark that are watered have grown into seedlings. They have germinated and started to grow because inside the seed is all the food (nutrients) they need to start growing. However, they will not grow into healthy plants without light.

The seeds growing in the light and being watered are growing well and have healthy looking green leaves. This is because all plants need light to keep their leaves green and healthy.

We will continue to observe our cress seeds until Friday, just to see if anything else will happen? Remember to water those that need watering!

What is happening to your bean? Remember to keep the tissue paper damp and write your bean diary.

Quest - Design and Technology

This week we would like you to plan, make and evaluate a healthy plant-based salad. Yummy!

There are so many different types of salads; fruit salad, vegetable salad, potato salad, pasta salad, rice salad etc! I wonder if you have a favourite? Try to use the following DT process if you can:-

1. Plan

Look at some different recipes in a cook book or on-line. See what items you have in your fridge and cupboards. Talk about your ideas and write a list of ingredients and equipment you will use.

2. Make

You will need lots of adult supervision especially with knives and any cooking (thanks, parents!) Click here for a useful youtube clip about the bridge hold cutting technique. And here is a clip about the claw hold.

3. Evaluate

Enjoy ..... you will need to eat your salad! What did you like about it? What did you dislike?

What did other members of your family think? What would you do differently next time?

Hope you enjoy this activity! Click on the picture if you would like an idea for a pasta salad.

Don't forget to email us some photos!
