Intent

At Bishops Hull Primary School we want to foster a love of history, after all history is all around us. It is in our families, in our cultures and traditions and in the wider are of Taunton and beyond. The study of history should ignite a passion in our children to want to learn about both British history and World history. If our children can find out, learn and understand how the world, the country and communities have changed and developed over time then they can begin to understand how the past can influence the present.

At Bishops Hull our intention is for children to have their curiosity stimulated so that they can develop their knowledge, understanding and skills. We want children to appreciate their own identity and the challenge they will face in their lifetime. We want children to understand the changes that have happened over their lifetime and how that can influence the choices they make in the future.

Implementation

In Foundation Stage, History is covered in the ‘Understanding the World’ area of the EYFS curriculum. It is introduced through taught sessions and through activities that encourage every child to explore, problem solve, observe, predict, think, make decisions and talk about the world around them.

In Key Stage 1 and 2, children will cover a range of exciting topics that showcase history. These will provide our children with a coherent understanding of British and World history. Our history curriculum has been constructed around key concepts that will allow children to make links to previous learning and knowledge acquired.  By the end of Year 6 children will have a chronological understanding of both British and World History. Our lessons are carefully implemented and sequences to allow children to demonstrate progression building upon previous knowledge and learning, we incorporate our knowledge rich vocabulary into our lessons and use a range of primary and secondary sources evidence to bring history to life in the classroom. We use historical visits and activities which allow children to develop a greater understanding of the world.
