Mathematics

Intent
At Bishops Hull Primary School, we foster a love of mathematics and a deep appreciation for the patterns and structures within the subject. Our intent is to provide every child with a broad and balanced maths curriculum that enables them to confidently explore, reason, and solve problems, building a secure understanding of mathematical thinking.
We follow the NCETM Curriculum Prioritisation and the Mastering Number programme, ensuring that all pupils develop strong number sense and fluency from the earliest stages. We also embed the Ashley Down Multiplication approach to support conceptual understanding and retention of multiplication facts through visual and practical strategies.
Teachers create a positive attitude towards maths learning in their classrooms and reinforce the belief that all children are capable of achieving high standards. We take a whole-school approach to the teaching and learning of mathematics, ensuring consistency, progression, and depth across all year groups.
Implementation
In the Foundation Stage, mathematics is taught through the EYFS framework, with a focus on developing early number sense, spatial awareness, and mathematical language. We use the Mastering Number programme to provide structured sessions that encourage children to explore numbers, patterns, and relationships through hands-on activities, play, and discussion. Children are supported to problem-solve, reason, and talk about their mathematical thinking in meaningful contexts.
In Key Stage 1 and 2, maths is taught using clear and comprehensive planning aligned with the NCETM Curriculum Prioritisation. Lessons are carefully sequenced to build on prior knowledge and ensure progression in fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving. Teachers use precise questioning and formative assessment strategies to identify misconceptions and adapt teaching to meet the needs of all learners.
We embed the Ashley Down Multiplication approach to support pupils in developing a deep and flexible understanding of multiplication and division. Conceptual understanding is strengthened through visual representations, repeated practice, and opportunities to apply knowledge in varied contexts.
Where appropriate, cross-curricular links are made to reinforce mathematical understanding, and real-life contexts are used to make learning meaningful. Themed days and enrichment opportunities are used to enhance engagement and deepen pupils’ mathematical thinking.
Impact
Our mathematics curriculum will ensure that children at Bishops Hull Primary School:
Develop a love and confidence in mathematics, seeing its relevance in everyday life and making clear connections between classroom learning and the wider world.
Achieve at least age-related expectations and above in mathematical knowledge, fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving by the end of each academic year.
Think mathematically and communicate effectively, using precise vocabulary and strategies to explain their reasoning and approach to problems.
Work collaboratively and independently, showing resilience and curiosity when tackling mathematical challenges.
Are well-prepared for the next stage of their education, with a secure foundation in number sense, calculation strategies, and mathematical thinking that supports future learning.
