Modern Foreign Language (French)

Intent
At Bishops Hull Primary School, we aim to foster a love of language learning. Our intent is to provide every child with a broad and engaging French curriculum that develops their confidence in listening, speaking, reading, and eventually writing in French, while promoting curiosity about other cultures and languages.
We follow the Rising Stars French scheme, which offers a clear progression of skills and knowledge across Key Stage 2. Through this approach, pupils build a strong foundation in vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammatical structures, enabling them to communicate effectively and express themselves creatively in French.
Teachers create a positive attitude towards language learning, encouraging resilience and enjoyment. We believe that all children are capable of achieving high standards in MFL and that learning a language enriches their understanding of the world and their place within it.
Implementation
In Key Stage 2, French is taught through the Rising Stars scheme, which provides structured, sequenced units that build on prior learning and ensure progression in all four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Lessons are interactive and engaging, using songs, games, stories, and role-play to make learning meaningful and enjoyable.
Teachers use clear modelling and repetition to support accurate pronunciation and intonation. Vocabulary and grammar are introduced in context, and pupils are given regular opportunities to practise and apply their learning through speaking activities, written tasks, and collaborative work.
Cultural awareness is embedded throughout the curriculum, with pupils exploring traditions, festivals, and daily life in French-speaking countries. Where appropriate, cross-curricular links are made to reinforce learning, and technology is used to enhance engagement through audio and visual resources.
Assessment is ongoing and formative, enabling teachers to identify misconceptions and adapt teaching to meet the needs of all learners. Progression is tracked across year groups to ensure consistency and depth.
