Maths.

Maths in Year 6 is such a vital subject. We teach maths daily for approximately one hour. This is broken down into sections. Our first section revolves around our fluency and speed in preparation for the arithmetic paper at the end of the year. The second section revolves around being taught and modelled a new key skills or revisiting a skill from the previous years. This is modelled and then the children have a go at applying this into their independent work. This can be practical, verbal or written application.

We then have an extension section to push those children further that have picked up the skill quickly and this is through either more challenging questions or through the application of real life skills.

Finally, we live mark to gain an understanding of where the children are at with the lesson and to address any common misconceptions that crop up in the lessons.

During the autumn term we start off with recapping the basics and building up on our arithmetic speed and knowledge from previous years. As the term progresses, we then move onto our fluency and we have a maths starter that consists of 10 arithmetic questions in 10 minutes building upon the style and format of the arithmetic questions.

Our autumn term tends to consist mainly of building up on the arithmetic knowledge and foundations of previous years. Once we get into the second term, we then start to introduce more of the reasoning type questions and focus on a range of core skills, all the time still doing our 10 questions in 10 minutes.

Our spring term will revolve around consolidation of daily arithmetic and focus on the reasoning type questions and modelling how to answer those.  All the time, we are continually revisiting the key skills and dipping into any new topics such as algebra and ratio.

Our summer term consists of SAT's and once this is over we focus on problem solving in the real world as well as transitional maths in order to prepare fully for secondary school.

Each term we try to incorporate a practise SAT's week to make it feel like the normality and to reduce any stress or pressure of the actual week. It is important to make the children feel at ease with these by the time they come around.
