How to support your child with their writing

Writing in School.

In Year 6, we spend a lot of time looking at grammar and a range of different sentence types to enhance our writing as we progress.

Each term we look at a range of high-quality texts and think about how we can write a different genre for that book. Some of these are cross- curricular linked and some are from texts that we think the children will love to read, explore and produce some great quality writing from.

We spend an hour each day on both grammar and writing. We start off with a hook lesson for each new text - something that will engage the children and want them to explore further.

We spend time dissecting the vocabulary: we look at the meaning of words and how we can then use these more adventurous language in our writing.

Then we have a planning stage which is modelled by an adult to promote a good plan by the children.

Following on, we have the first draft stage again this is modelled by an adult to promote a good example of what a piece of writing should look like. Children are then given the opportunity to write for themselves thinking of the necessary skills needed in the writing.

We then spend some time looking at editing and improving. We do this in peers as it helps for others to peruse our work and it can be a good opportunity for more reading. We spend a good couple of sessions on this sometimes as it is a key skill in our writing.

Finally, we then produce a lovely published piece of work as it is vital to have this to show for all the hard work the children have put into their writing. It is also a great way to end that piece of writing.
