Handwriting
It is vital children learn to write quickly, comfortably and legibly and it is essential that correct letter formation is taught and learnt at an early age so handwriting become an automatic skill.
In EYFS and Year 1 letter formation is initially taught through our Little Wandle phonic programme where children learn to form their initial letters alongside the teaching of their initial sounds and later the associated capital letters. At Bishop's Hull we also follow Nelson handwriting and all handwriting is taught by demonstration, explanation and practice.
Writing units following the immerse, innovate, invent sequence
Throughout each term, children will be exposed to fiction and non-fiction texts and learn to create writing in both styles. They will also explore poetry and write their own poems.
Immerse
Each writing unit will incorporate a range of teaching and learning strategies. A variety of resources are used as a stimuli for writing known as the 'hook'. The 'hook' might include a real-life experience, film clips, drama, photographs, an object or a rich engaging text. The aim is to use resources which inspire enthusiasm for writing.
Exemplar text are used to identify key features of specific text types and consider the writing style. The children and teacher work together to create a 'Writer's Toolkit'(success criteria). In Year One, we include story and text maps to encourage children to learn different text types by heart.
Innovate and invent
As the writing unit progresses there is explicit teaching of specific grammar skills and lots of modelled writing to help the children progress through the innovation and towards the invent stage where they create their own writing. At the end of the unit, the children are support to edit their work with their peers and with teachers.
Finally, we often publish our work in our best writing for display which is a great way to show all of the fantastic hard work the children have put into their writing.
End of year writing expectations
Bishop's Hull Primary School assesses children against age related expectations in writing. These expectations have been organised into bands which reflect the year group. Band 1 is the end of year expectation for children
in Year 1. Please note this is the end of year expectation.
