Welcome to Reception!

We are very excited to see all of the children and we are sure they will settle into school quickly.  We know it is a lot of new information and routines for you and your child - if you have any questions please feel free to ask.

Over the next term we will be;

Finding out about the topics ‘This is me’, Harvest and Christmas.  We will be reading and learning stories based around these themes and our activities will then link to these.  We will also follow the children’s interests and adapt activities to support this. Through the children's interests, play and planned activities we will also cover other subjects such as music, RE, PSHE, Geography, Science, History....

In Literacy we will be reading lots of stories, practsing to orally retell and sequence them.  Lots of the stories will link to our themes and events that happen during the Autumn. We will also begin to practise reading and writing small words.

We will be starting phonics learning the sounds m a s d t i n p g o c k u b   The children will also be practising to correctly form these letters.  We will also spend lots of time building up the children’s hand muscles getting them ready to write!  We will be introducing Read Write Inc later in the term, more information will follow.

We will be doing lots of sorting and matching, comparing quantities, recognising numbers to 5, exploring what each number means, finding out about pattern, naming 2D and beginning some simple addition.  We will also practise lots of oral counting and matching sets of objects to the correct numeral.

We will be finding out about our bodies and our senses. We will be naming different parts of our bodies and finding out about our bones.  We will then explore our senses through practical activities.

In history we will be finding out how we have changed since being babies, we will explore how we have changed and what we can do now that we couldn't do before. We will also find out about Guy Fawkes and the history of Bonfire Night.

We will be exploring the school and the school grounds as well as looking at where we live and different types of homes.

We will be thinking about how special we are and our own special places.  We will also find out how Harvest is celebrated by Christians and Jews. Later in the term we will find out why Christmas is special to Christians around the world.

We will be singing lots of nursery rhymes and rhymes linked to our topics.  We will begin exploring rhythm and beat through these rhymes and with some instruments.

We will be exploring ways of printing with different objects, colour mixing and painting portraits.  We will be thinking about observing carefully as we practise our drawing skills.

PSE (Personal, Social and Emotional Development)

To support this area of development we will be reading lots of stories to help the children understand their emotions and recognise how they are feeling. We will use Growth Mindset activities to support the children in developing positive learning strategies like resilience and perseverance.

We will be learning lots of playground and team games for the first half term before moving on to multi skill activities. This will be linked to stories which will develop balance, co ordination and core strength.

Forest School

We are excited about starting Forest School which will be on a Wednesday afternoon, please see the Forest School letter for more information about this.

Our PE day will be Tuesday, please send your child to school in their PE kit (shorts and t-shirt and trainers). As they will be in their PE kit all day if it is cold, the children should wear leggings or jogging bottoms and a sweatshirt.

Please ensure that all your child’s belongings are named. This includes cardigans, water bottles and shoes!

Please see the class letter for more general information.

If you ever have any worries or concerns please speak to any of the adults, send us a message on tapestry or email the school office and we will get back to you as soon as possible.
