Spring Term 2022

Happy New Year!  We hope you all had lovely breaks with family and friends and the children are ready for a new, fun term in school.

Click the link below to find out about the topic we are doing this half term.

Autumn Term 2021

Welcome to Year 1!

This term we will be getting to know each other and how things work in our classroom.

The children will be introduced to our class bears, Jill and Murphy, and each week children will be chosen to take one of the bears home for the weekend.  The bears are given to the children who receive a Golden Leaf for super learning, attitude, kindness, effort etc.

We will continue to use Tapestry as a way of showing you some of the things we have been doing in class.  You are welcome to post pictures of anything the children would like to show us too.  We will gradually encourage the children to take photos and upload their own learning.   We will use Tapestry for any updates or things you need to know throughout the term.

Areas of Learning

In Maths our focus will be numbers 1-20 and really getting a solid understanding of these.  We will be learning about shape too.  Children will carry out a range of activities practically and in small groups.

In Literacy we will be following a phonic scheme called Read Write Inc (more information to follow).  We will also be sharing lots of Jill Murphy stories.  In the first couple of weeks we will be sharing a book called 'The Invisible', this story will be a focus across the whole school.

Topics over this term will include:

  • Where we live
  • Seasons
  • Humans
  • Eating healthily
  • Bonfire Night
  • The Great Fire of London
  • RE - stories found in the Bible and Christmas

A few handy things....

  • Remember to drop your child at the door.
  • Forest School will be on a Wednesday for the first half term, so please come to school dressed ready for Forest School and bring uniform to change into.  Wellies in a seperate bag please, and also make sure they have a waterproof coat.
  • PE will be on a Friday for the first half term so please come to school in PE Kit.
  • Please don't bring in toys etc from home at the moment.
  • Children are able to have a fruit snack at playtime along with milk if they have it. Can your child bring in a labelled water bottle everyday.
  • We wash hands regularly throughout the school day.
  • The children are enjoying a mix of whole class teaching, group activities and continuous provision to help the transition from Reception to Year 1 and have opportunities to play in our small outdoor area.

Please read at least 3 times a week. It’s so important they read little and often, particularly in the early stages of reading.  Please help your child to spot key words and talk about the text together.  We will be reading this together in school too.

We change all the reading books on a Monday morning.  In school your child will be listened to on a weekly basis either individually or in a guided group. If your child needs to change their reading book, just let us know when you drop them off.

If you have any questions about this, feel free to drop us an email or telephone the school and we will get back to you.

Things you can do to help at home:

  • Read at least 3 times a week.
  • Practise writing their names, forming the letters correctly.
  • Reading key words - you could write a couple and pop on the fridge and swap each week.
  • Count from 1-20
  • Order numbers from 1-20 - can they recognise all the numbers?
  • Play dice games

If you have any questions or concerns then please contact the office by phone or email and we will get back to you as soon as we can.

We look forward to a very busy term in Murphy Class!
