Murphy Class (Year 1)

                 Welcome to Murphy Class!

Have you read any stories by Jill Murphy?

Which are your favourites?

Welcome to the Summer term!

We hope you all had a wonderful Easter break and were able to see family and friends and have some days out too.

We are really looking forward to the Summer term and all the fun activities we have planned.  Over the next term the children will be learning about Plants and Growing, Habitats and minibeasts and our local area.

In Literacy:

We will be continuing with Phase 5 Phonics and learning new sounds and ways of spelling.  We will also be encouraging the children to be more independent with their writing and help them to write at greater length.  Handwriting will continue to be a focus to ensure we are forming our letters correctly.

Focus texts:

Ten Seeds by Ruth Brown

Oi Frog! - poetry

Non-fiction - sunflowers, minibeasts

Maths-

Count within 100, forwards and backwards, starting with any number.

Reason about the location of numbers to 20.

Count forward and backwards in multiples of 2,5 and 10.

Position numbers to 10, including recognising odd and even numbers.

Develop fluency in addition and subtraction facts within 10.

Measure linked to plants.

Capacity and money linked through our continuous provision.

RE

God and the covenant- children will look at various Jewish festivals, ceremonies and stories found in the Old Testament.

Keep a look out on Tapestry for updates of things your children have been doing in school, and remember to send photos of things from home too.  Thank you to those parents who have sent photos in so far. As part of our ICT we will getting the children involved in sharing their work too! Their individual log-ins will eventually be in their BHBof E.

Please can you continue to support your child with their weekly spellings. You will find them in their Bishop's Hull Book of Everything (BHBoE).  We have a test on a Monday and give out new spellings then too.

Please continue to read regularly with your child too.  A couple of pages every day would be fantastic, but at least 4 times a week please and record this in their BHBoE too.

PE continues to be on a Tuesday so please ensure PE kit is in school. We are also trying to get out for an extra session of PE on a Friday too, this will be a shorter session so just trainers are required.

Forest School is on a Wednesday so the children need to wear their old clothes to school and bring their wellies in a separate bag.  Then bring their uniform to change into after.

If you have any questions or worries then please call or email the school and we will get back to you as soon as we can.

Thank you for your ongoing support.  Here's to a wonderful term in school!

A few handy things....

  • Remember to drop your child at the door.
  • Forest School will be on a Wednesday, so please come to school dressed ready for Forest School and bring uniform to change into.  Wellies in a seperate bag please, and also make sure they have a waterproof coat.
  • PE will be on a Tuesday but please make sure their named PE kit is in school everyday.
  • Please don't bring in toys etc from home at the moment.
  • Children are able to have a fruit snack at playtime along with milk if they have it. Can your child bring in a labelled water bottle everyday.
  • We wash hands regularly throughout the school day.
  • The children are enjoying a mix of whole class teaching, group activities and continuous provision to help the transition from Reception to Year 1 and have opportunities to play in our small outdoor area.

Reading

The Bishop's Hull Books of Everything (BHBoE) have arrived and your child has brought it home along with two reading books and a shared text (stuck in).

Please read at least 3 times a week. It’s so important they read little and often, particularly in the early stages of reading.  Your child can read their book or the shared text.  The shared text will change each week and is a text for you to share with your child, we don't expect your child to read every word!  Please help your child to spot key words and talk about the text together.  We will be reading this together in school too.

We change all the reading books on a Monday morning.  In school your child will be listened to on a weekly basis either individually or in a guided group. If your child needs to change their reading book, just let us know when you drop them off.

If you have any questions about this, feel free to drop us an email or telephone the school and we will get back to you.

Things you can do to help at home:

  • Read at least 3 times a week.
  • Practise writing their names, forming the letters correctly.
  • Reading key words - which you will find in the Bishop Hull Book of Everything, you could write a couple and pop on the fridge and swap each week.
  • Count from 1-20
  • Order numbers from 1-20 - can they recognise all the numbers?
  • Play dice games

If your child is off poorly for any reason we will have some activities that can be done at home linked to what we will be doing at school. Please click on the star at the top of the page!

Kind regards,
